The Pioneering Women in STEM (PWIS) scholarship is a fully-funded award from the Swedish Institute exclusively for women from 10 countries in Africa and Asia, including Indonesia. It supports master's studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at Swedish universities. Women from the 10 eligible countries who apply to STEM programmes are automatically considered — no separate application needed. Covers full tuition, SEK 12,000/month, and a travel grant.

Detailed requirements

  • - Female citizens only
  • - Citizen and resident of one of the 10 eligible countries (including Indonesia)
  • - Minimum 3,000 hours of work experience (from max. 3 employers) before February 2026
  • - Demonstrated leadership experience from work or civil society involvement
  • - Must apply to an eligible STEM master's programme at Swedish universities
  • - Not a citizen or permanent resident of Sweden/EU/EEA
  • - Has not previously received a Swedish Institute scholarship

How to apply

  1. 1Step 1 (Oct 15 – Jan 15): Apply to eligible STEM master's programmes at UniversityAdmissions.se. Note your 8-digit application number.
  2. 2Step 2 (Feb 9 – Feb 25): Apply via the SI portal (apply-scholarships.si.se) — same portal as SISGP. Female applicants from 10 eligible countries applying to STEM programmes are automatically considered for PWIS.
  3. 3Step 3: SI screens applications for eligibility and conducts initial evaluation with PWIS goals in mind.
  4. 4Step 4 (Mar 26): University Admissions announces results.
  5. 5Step 5 (Apr 23): SI announces scholarship recipients.
