The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a full-cost postgraduate scholarship at the University of Cambridge, open to citizens of any country outside the UK. Established in 2000 with a US$210m donation from the Gates Foundation. Around 80 scholarships per year across all subjects; approximately 55 available in the international round.

Detailed requirements

  • - Must be a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
  • - Applying for a full-time PhD, MLitt, or one-year postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge
  • - Part-time PhD pilot scheme also available
  • - Outstanding academic achievement (nominated by Cambridge department as among most academically excellent applicants)
  • - Strong reasons for course choice - PhD applicants must identify a potential supervisor and develop a research project
  • - Demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of others
  • - Evidence of leadership potential
  • - Needs-blind process - financial circumstances not considered
  • - Cannot fund: undergraduate degrees, MBA/EMBA, MFin, PGCE, MBBChir, part-time degrees (except PhD pilot), MASt
